beat me to it. to start with do the easy install and allow Debian to do
the partitions for you. follow that link i provided earlier as it is a
basic install even if it is a tad out of date.
FYI, debian is one of the harder distros to start with. you might want
to try FC or SuSe to start with as they have very clean GUI installers
much like Windows and might be easier to get installed for the first time.
