Jason,

I had used suspend successfully with Fedora 6/7/8 on an AMD-based Acer
desktop to good effect.  Suspend has also worked successfully with
various HP and Lenovo Intel-based notebooks.  I would say that it is
fairly safe to use on modern hardware.
