So here's the deal. I bought an ipod touch, which I've jailbroken so I can install third party apps on it. I've got the unofficial ipod touch development toolchain installed, so I can write my own apps for it.
I had the idea to use it as a wi-fi based universal remote control. It's cheaper than most dedicated touch screen remotes.
My idea is to build an embedded Linux box, install LIRC on it and then write a cool little GUI program for the ipod that sends commands over wifi to the LIRC box. A $5 IR blasting circuit (http://www.lirc.org/improved_transmitter.html) would send the IR commands to my (stereo receiver, DVR box, DVD player which would be hidden in a closest nearby) and also to the TV. My stereo receiver also happens to have serial input, so I could also just send it serial commands directly.
So I'm looking at one of these boxes with a miniPCI WiFi card. There's a linux distro available for it too.

I was jsut wondering if anyone had tried this hardware before.
