These are different kernel images. They were compiled for different
types of computers and cpu. I think that the 686 is for a notebook type
computer and if is doesn't have smp option it is for a single core. The
numbers after the 2.6 are the different versions of the 2.6 kernel. I
am no expert but Debian should be the place to look for the answer as
they compiled these stock kernels. You can choose the kernel that best
suits you at installation. This can be changed easily later if you want
or need to. I hope that this helps.
