That's what the developers chose, as their favorite and stable distro to
base it on, due to the full toolset.

I run Mepis 32 and 64 bit, and am satisfied with them, except that,
there are a few tools missing in the distro...
I am starting to advance my level of use, and find it an annoyance, and
a major flaw to not have  some tools available.
