since its at the knowledge shop my guess would be check with Steve Litt
he may know. He is on the list..
I spent about 1.5 years on the OpenOffice support list (supporting 10-50
user problems per day). If you know Microsoft office anything longer
than about 2 hours is an overkill... (Base is another animal)
Correcting all of the current word users misuse, and misunderstandings
takes longer.. ie not using styles may take longer.. Thousands of
different font faces per document etc.. If you want to know about
differences and problems people experience give me a call I will be
happy to talk about it.. (work 407-830-6302 x111 or cell 321-436-2067)
The time I spent on the support list proved to me that OpenOffice is not
the problem, its people who claim to know how word works and the saying
that OpenOffice is not compatible. When they don't even understand how
word works. Unless you are a high power user.. ie someone who writes
macro's compatibility is not an issue.
Example: I sent a document to my buddy who opened it in OpenOffice and
it looks like shit.. After about 5 exchanges to get more information you
find out he has created a document using abcxubsacst font he stole
about 5 years form some custom font site. When I open it with word on
my computer it looks great. Do you have openoffice installed to look
at it on your computer.. NO... Well your word document will look
different to anyone you sent your document even in word to also unless
you also have them load that custom font... As both word and OpenOffice
substitute fonts from the font list.. Word never changes anything I
do.. OpenOffice is just crap..
or my favorite.. what is all of this style crap OpenOffice has..
reply it works exactly the same as styles in word they are just easier
to apply... NO word doesn't have styles..
or anytime I send someone a document its broke they can't open it.
Openoffice is not compatible. Did you send them an ODF or a Doc
file.. reply: There is no difference.. and I shouldn't have to worry
about that. reply.. do you understand that word also has the ability
to write documents in many other formats just like openoffice the
difference is the default in OpenOffice is set to a open approved
standard, also you can change the default format so have it write
anything you want..in both word and office.. The one difference is word
will not support a world accepted standard of ODF.. NO you can't that
in wor.. . OpenOffice is just not compatible..
and it goes on and on..
I wrote a paragraph on the support list that has been resent thousands
of times. .
Ask you self three question before you send out a document..
1)... Do they need to edit the document I send them.
yes -- if you don't know what they use for word processing send a
doc file.
no-- send them a PDF file..
2).. Do they need to copy parts of my document..
yes or no.. send them a PDF file.
3). Do we need to collaborate on the document..
no --- PDF
yes.. you all need to discuss the requirements..
99.99999% of the time number one is the answer... for some reason word
user always want to send out editable formats when they don't want
anyone to change their document..
I am fixing a problem at work.. two users decided to get word 2007
which by default writes a file that is only compatible with itself..
Anytime I got one.. I sent this reply..
I received the document you sent but find I can't open it. Further
investigation showed the problem to be your using a document editor
which by default writes a file that can only be used by other word 2007
users. Stated another way it is not readable by 99.% of the people in
the world. In order for me to read what you sent I would have to
expend over 350 dollars of the companies money which I am not willing to
do. I also question who approved the 350 plus dollar company
expenditure allowing you to create this situation. If the document you
wish me to read is important please save it in a compatible format and
resend it. Alternately we could all save the company lots of money and
use OpenOffice which is free... or you could send a PDF, which by the
way.. OpenOffice does with expending money on a PDF writing software. ..
Fred.
Now anytime a new person is hired they get a copy OpenOffice already
installed.. Slowly the conversion is taking place.. Fred
