if you replace the firmware, then it may gain or lose capabilities  
based on what the new firmware supports. it may be possible, for  
example, to make the unit act like a true access point, without trying  
to act as a NAT router, DHCP server, or any other function beyond the  
normal wireless association, and bridging the wired and wireless  
segments together. so the term "ritter" may not be accurate in your  
case.

i'm not familiar with "tomato firmware" so i can't really give a more  
definitive answer than that. i do know that, when using the stock  
linksys firmware, a 54G can be configured to provide almost the same  
functionality as a real access point, so long as you don't connect any  
ethernet cables to the "WAN" port.
