The biggest issue I've had with soundcards are those stupid tiny plugs and 
jacks becoming intermittent and therefore static sounding. I've lessened 
these problems with electronic lubrication (see 
http://www.troubleshooters.com/tpromag/200310/200310.htm).

If you have an intermittent plug/jack connection, the finest card with the 
most spectacular driver won't begin to make up for it.
