All PackageKit did to me is re-enable the "yum-updatesd" (forgot the "s"
at the end in my prior e-mail) service. Stopping that service and
restarting GNOME caused the applet to disappear. ;)
Otherwise, as Fuzzy mentioned, removing "gnome-packagekit" is another
way to get rid of the applet as well.
