I have to disagree with the no freezing thing. If everything else fails, try 
it. But generally it only works when the drive fails after it heats up. 
Freezing makes the temperature curve take longer to reach the fail point.

Then, when you have rescued everything off of it you can, a 30 second dip in 
liquid nitrogen and a 4 foot drop to concrete is a perfectly reasonable way 
to end it's life and much less work than picking up a hammer...
