[Leaplist] Fastest backup possible?

I was busy gimping away on some web buttons, and my laptop
drive made a couple of funny ticking noises. Strange, it's never
ticked like that. Curious, I hit dmesg and saw a couple of drive
errors on hda. So I closed out my work, hit Synaptic to grab
some S.M.A.R.T. drive utilities. Oops - as I was downloading,
my drive made a couple more funny ticking noises - then a bunch
of unfunny ticking noises, followed by a desktop lockup. Trusting
the gods of ext3, I hit the power button, and pulled the drive.
I've heard that sometimes drives can be temporarily revived
with a few hours in the fridge. Any truth to that? If I do get the
drive to come alive, what's the least drive-thrashing, fastest
way to get my home folder onto another drive? I've got other
machines and a 100mb network - I figured plugging the laptop
in would be much faster than wireless.
Thoughts, tips and tricks appreciated.
Cheers, Chris
