I've been wanting to do that -- forever.  The only 'solution' I've found is to 
run `x11vnc`, which will attach itself to a running session and let you VNC 
into it.  Because it is run after the fact, it seems to be one of the slower 
VNC options and cannot avail itself of all the tricks to speed up a VNC 
session.

Although I haven't tried it, you can use NX to tunnel VNC sessions -- see my 
earlier post on NX -- and that can speed up the responsiveness somewhat.  
You'll need a dedicated NX bounce box (Linux box) to accomplish this.

If anyone has found a better way to access the active X11 session, I'd love to 
hear about it.

Hrm, there's a guide for installing FreeNX for Ubuntu 7.10; He suggests 
`x11vnc` for accessing the active X session, too.
