Thank you for those links and repositories.  I will add them tomorrow.  
For now I have a working Debian box, gnome *grrrr* that plays DVDs 
(cheers on  "On Her Magesty's Secret Service 007" working) and plays MP3 
and WMA, have not checked if it plays M4A yet or not, but it should.

Ill have the box with me tomorrow for the install fest and will need 
help getting data moved from a set of dieing HDDs onto good working ones.
