Just found this. Apparently there is a solution for Ubuntu. I'm guessing
that it will work with Debian also. Here is the link:

Subject: [Leaplist] MS Office 2007 DOCX files.
I am running Ubuntu and Open Office 2.2. My college has installed MS Office
2007 on their computers over the summer break. I am now getting DOCX file
extensions as attached files. I found an RPM file on Novells web site that
says it is for Open SUSE version of Open Office. I downloaded it and
converted it to a DEB package using Alien. I installed the DEB package and
tried to open the file. An error message popped up and the message says
that the file has read errors. Does anyone know a work around or when will
Ubuntu have a package converter available?
Thanks for your input.
Andy
The program said "Requires Windows 98 or better to run properly." So I
installed Linux.
