i've always used ".internal" for this... and when i started reading
about how everybody's world was coming to an end because active
directory was doing funny things with ".local" names, i patted myself
on the back for using ".internal" instead.

for much the same reason, whenever i set up an AD for a client (maybe
once a year) i always choose a name which doesn't end with ".com",
".net", or anything like that. that way, no matter what happens with
the AD names, there are no conflicts with names on the real internet.
