OK lets get this straight. For a car you can buy a Dodge, Chevy, Ford,
Honda, even a Suzuki.
What if?
You have been driving a Chevy for years and suddenly they tell you.
Remember that Impalla you have been driving for 49.95 per month on our
road to your house. well, we have got a good deal for you.. now you can
have a Chevette, Nova, Chevelle, or a Corvette they are all built with
exactly the same parts, we have even redesigned them to all look exactly
the same outside except A is faster then B and A is cheaper than B etc..
oh yea you can have different combinations of exactly the same car we
will configure them how ever you want. You can back up very slowly while
other backup fast, some go faster forward but cost more. But they all
are exactly the same car, and they look the same outside you just have
to pay a different price.
Then Ford comes along you check them out and think I will change. They
are faster, more reliable and have style some even look different. Did
I mention that some are even cheaper. And when you look at the service
shops they even have people there to do the work.
Now your friendly Chevy dealer tells you "Oh NO you don't" you can only
have one of OUR cars If you do buy a Ford you can't drive it home no
matter how much better or cheaper it is. The road will be blocked one
mile down the road. Oh and one more thing you can only buy gas at our
stations or we will make sure your car slows way, way down or even
stops, perhaps we won't let you drive at all.. on the roads to your
house. Did I mention that you are required to sign a user agreement
with us that says we can do anything we ever want to screw you up. If
you call us about a problem we will just make you wait. BTW even though
we are selling you a Corvette you can't drive it at full speed very long
or we will take it away and now you won't have anything. Our decision
if final take it or leave it.
And I haven't even mentioned anything about how Chevy is now free to
kill port 25, kill P2P, even stop all access except port 80 if they
wanted to (remember the agreement), charge for delivering content over
and over again. Services you got with the original Impala now cost more
for you to get.. and you can do absolutely nothing about it except
move, only to be faced with exactly the same problem in another town
except now you get to deal with a Honda vs Suzuki.
Are you arguing that this is just a good business model? Are you
arguing that people should be happy to pay more than they should for the
slower forward and reverse model ChevyA, and have no choice?
In my mind there is a very big difference between good business and a
monopoly. Thats why we pay 10 times the amount everyone else in the
world pays for bandwidth.
