A few years back when I would have to defrag certain machines (Win9x,
NT4, and Win3.11), the machine would either hit screensaver/disk spin
down or other activity that would cause autorestart.  My solution to
keep the machine 'active' was to take the user's stapler and sit it
over an arrow key on the keyboard.  It would run all night with no
issues.

A more modern approach is to use a cheap $2 optical mouse and keep the
LED scanning moving object.  More fun to find creative ways to keep it
active.
