Actually the second you author something it becomes copyrighted by you
as your original work.  You can register it, or not your decision.  It
has been like this since I think 1976..  Here is the difference.. if you
register your copyright and have a legal battle you are entitled to
punitive damages.  If you don't register the copyright you can only
recover actual damages.    So copyright is a very real thing.. you don't
even need to publish the work, just creating it created the copyright... see
