my guess is this:

- you, or somebody in your network, did a search for something "spammy"

- google marked your IP address as "requires captcha".

- that status expired after a few hours, or you got a new IP address  
from brighthouse.

it could also be that you had just gotten a new IP address, and  
whoever had it before was doing "spammish" things.
