[Leaplist] Not needed or wanted Password screen(s)

I installed the latest Debian on my AMD 32 machine.
This model of Debian installs a Password Screen that pops up after just 
a few minutes of inactivity and whenever one want to do something.  It 
is driving me nuts!!!!!!!!

The top line of my /etc/passwd file reads:
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
if that is meaningful.
I would like to extend the password time out to 500,000 hours or 
whatever and/or cancel it out completely.
I do not want to make a move that might lock me out completely so I am 
coming to the experts for an answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
