Just for reference... you can usually swap-out the broken drive for any
laptop replacement cd/dvd/writer. you would just need to make sure they are
both for laptops and that they are the same size(i.e. standard or slim).
Once you purchase the new drive, remove the old drive from the plastic
casing it is in when you remove it from laptop bay, then replace the plastic
casing onto the new drive(including the adapter for plug at rear of drive)
before placing it in the laptop bay.
I have changed out many drives in laptops, and I very rarely have problems.
You need to be sure to not break the tray faceplate on your old drive,
because getting another one to match your laptop can be more expensive than
the new drive was.

Well... the problem there is that usually the outer plastic molding is
unique to a specific laptop model. While they do sell laptop CD-ROMS (look
specifically for "slim" drives), you may find it difficult to find one
that actually fits (and interfaces) with your laptop. Your best bet is
probably e-bay.
