My Thunderbird mail program Image will not remain on my desktop when I
click on the image.  The  "compose" or first page briefl shows up and
then it disapears into never never land.
I have tried to replace the icon, checked the properties, and on and on.
  No luck finding the icon and/or the messages I have placed into the
various and sundry drawers.

What happened?  How do I recover?

Sorry should have added some details.

This is on a 32 bit machine running Ubuntu with full updates, 1 geg 
memory and lots of room on the hard drive.
