Unless you want to go os-less for political reasons, my findings are your best
bang for the buck is buying a windows computer and putting Linux on it.
When I went to Costco to buy my Compaq v6133cl, I told them I was going to put
Linux on it, and could I return it if Linux didn't run right on it. They
assured me I could return it if Linux didn't run on it, for 6 months from
purchase, if I kept the original receipt.
I loaded 32 bit Mandriva 2007 on the notebook and went to Chicago for several
weeks. It performed perfectly except for the lame Broadcom wireless NIC. So I
bought a Linksys WUSB54G USB Wireless NIC and ndiswrappered it -- all is
good. I didn't need to return it, even though I could have.
My Compaq v6133cl, bought in October 2006, was $999.99, complete with a Turion
64 dual core, 2GB of RAM, and 100 GB of disk.
