That jogged my memory about yet another reason to use 'ip':

If a program uses the netlink API directly (such as the keepalived  
load balancer program), IP addresses can be allocated to a machine  
that will not show up in ifconfig output.

Also, after using various network gear, typing "ip addr show" just  
seems more natrual. :)
