You can save a buck on Western Digital (WD) drives but I detest their jumper parameters. Maxtor allows a setting for master with or without a slave present. Much better for people like me who are utilizing removable drive bays.

Note: Years ago I had trouble mixing Maxtor and WD drives on the same ribbon.

Bruce's statement of trend and consistency in where each system stalls at and how it is a variable between distros and hardware... I would consider a key clue.
