. automated/unattended backups

. initial cost is higher than CD/DVD media
. don't drop your hard drive
The investment in hard drive media for archiving has proved very cost effective for me in just time alone.
As far as format is concerned, any time you change the structure of data you increase risk of data corruption. Imaging a partition from one drive to another is extremely easy with a live CD.
