If your need is external backup, you simply reformat the external drive
for ext3 or reiserFS .
NEVER use ANY Microsoft formatted FAT, FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS filesystem
for backup, as they are proven to be INFERIOR and to cause SERIOUS
problems with file integrity, disks, drives, most media, and many
attempts at recovery!!!
Microsoft OSes can use other, safer, file systems, instead of the FAT or
NTFS. I think ReiserFS and JFS are two, but, you might look them up in
a web search.
I ALWAYS reformat all USB and FireWire drives to run EXT3 or ReiserFS.
Microsoft destroys drives, and I have the past then years of destroyed
hard drives to prove it, next to the large amount of other OS filesystem
formatted drives, that are still running just great!
And, one more note: In the press, it was announced in March/April 2007,
in some technical pubs., that the major drive makers lied about how long
their products could run before failure. Seems they had a little
advertising war, and overstated their product longevity.
