RLiegh <http://slashdot.org/%7ERliegh> sends us to an AP article
reporting that Linspire has signed a patent deal with Microsoft
<http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070614/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_linspire;_ylt=AvVYijIGjPVnh7.CbDc2FCXMWM0F>.
The company, which started out life as "Lindows," joins a growing
<http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/07/06/04/1630233.shtml?tid=109> list
<http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/07/06/07/1731252.shtml?tid=155> of patent
<http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/07/04/20/1440218.shtml?tid=155> agreements
reached between Microsoft and vendors
<http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/07/05/26/0631242.shtml?tid=223>.
Linspire will be granted a license to use True Type Fonts and "various
code" that would allow for Linspire users to use voice on Windows Live
Messenger as well as the usual patent protection
<http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/06/11/10/1929210.shtml?tid=109> for
Linspire's customers. In return, among other things, Linspire will make
Microsoft's search engine the default search on PCs shipped with their
OS. Kevin Carmony, the CEO for Linspire, approached Microsoft a year and
a half ago, according to the article.
I like the idea of the access to some of the code like TTF and the VOICE
access, but i think it is funny yto put MS search engine as the
default. i am guessing that is for the web browser as linux does not
have explorer.
