Just plugged in a MSI K8NGM2-FID board with Sempron 3000+ on a retro
tower box, with a new 550 watt PSU, and a 30Gb WD drive.
Used my TTX 18" monitor, a Compaq ps2 keyboard and an IBM ps2 mouse.
Have a pair of house speakers.
Everything just works. Used the Mepis 6.5 64bit distro Livecd.
Sound is 7.1! I only plugged in my little desktop speakers, though.
One problem.
A Western Digital hard drive comes from the factory with a jumper
shorting pins 4-6, horizontally.
I had it shorted for single master drive Pins 3-4, vertically.
The BIOS didn't recognize the drive! Found and fixed that, and all is
well. It will be going in here, to speed up this workspace.
The MSI board with processor and fan cost $89.00 (complete, shipping
included, from 3Btech). Was here, UPS ground, in 5 days.
Including the 7.1 slot extension, the serial com1 extention, and the DVI
cable for RGB rca plugs.
On board is the DVI connector plus a VGA connector, a parallel port, the
standart mic, line in/out jacks, joystick port, and PS2 connectors for
keyboard and mouse.
Also, there are four USB plugs, an ethernet connector, and a Firewire
1394 connector. On board are some pins for front connections of USB and
Firewire 1394.
This is very complete and a quick system for my experimentation into
modern 64 bit processing!
I installed 768Mb DDR 3200 memory (2x 256Mb, plus 2x 128Mb) that I have
here, into the color coded slots, in pair, hoping it would work right,
and the memory seems to be great!
Hey, it isn't the fastest, it is the fastest I have tried. In my
budget, too! CPU is the AMD clocked at 1800Mhz for the core, 1000mhz
FSB, 800 for MB.
More later. if needed, email me for more info.
