You know what I do when that happens with Mandriva? After Mandriva 
installation I back up xorg.conf, then I fire up a Knoppix live CD, copy the 
xorg.conf to /mnt/hda1/etc/X11 or whatever, then reboot without Knoppix, and 
often the Knoppix xorg.conf is enough for you now to get video, although it's 
often flickery.
