first make sure the ethernet interface is configured for DHCP instead  
of a static IP, using whatever management interface the distro gives  
you.

then, turn the cable modem off, wait about three minutes, and turn it  
back on. wait a few minutes and see if the linux box doesn't  
automatically re-do the DHCP request. if not, force it (i.e. "ifdown  
eth0 ; sleep 10 ; ifup eth0".)
