If possible - change power supplies.....you'd
be amazed how many issues can root back to that (and, yes, only one
hard-drive per IDE cable will help to remove head-aches).

It's
weird that your optical drives doesn't show up in dmesg....maybe double
check connections....replace IDE cables....re-quadruple check the
jumpers
