Erm, this smells like something else... I commonly use the /media
directory for... well, just that:

 # ll /media
total 24
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 22 16:31 dvd
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 23 10:36 external-usb
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 30 22:25 plextor
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 18 21:51 rev
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 19 22:09 sony_handycam
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 18 21:10 usb-stick

Anyway, this almost smells like a filesystem that's mounted in read-only
mode. Most common reason for that is when the kernel sees I/O errors
and remounts the FS RO to prevent damage to it.

Are you sure this isn't part of a bigger problem?
