Thanks for all the suggestions. The results:
Ray suggested that the 400W power supply might be insufficient. I don't
have a larger one to swap out, so I disconnected three hard drives, the
floppy, and the modem. Running only the mb, CDROM, one HD, and a video
card, I get the same results.
Dan suggested I check the CD in another system to see if it had been
damaged. Tried that. Loads just fine and passes the CD check.
He also asked if I were using the 32- or 64-bit version. I'm sticking to
the 32-bit version so that all my systems will be running the same version.
He also asked if I had tried Edgy. Yes, and it fails exactly the same
way. I'm using Dapper instead because of some compatibility issues with
other machines.
Steve asked what happened when I boot to boot level 1 (single user). I
can't get that far. As for what's in /etc/fstab, I can say with
confidence there's *nothing* there. This HD hasn't yet been formatted
for Linux, and still has Windoze in an NTFS partition.
He also suggested disabling unnecessary services. Afraid I don't get far
enough along to *have* services.
Thanks for the ideas. Sorry none of them were the answer.
Any other ideas to share?
Bruce
