What happens when you boot to boot level 1? I think you boot Linux 1 or Linux
single out of grub by pressing e for edit.
If you can get into single user mode (boot level 1), take a look at /etc/fstab
and maker sure there's nothing terrible there. Actually, you could do that by
mounting your root drive in Knoppix and then look at the file from there.
Also, try disabling any unnecessary services, and maybe temporarily disable
services you DO need.
