[Leaplist] Install Troubles ... still

Hiyas,

Okay, so I've given up on the dark side and am switching over. No dual
boots, either. All's well on several systems, but.... (cue the sad violins)

My big machine won't load the distro I want. It'll load Knoppix and DSL
just fine. Some days it'll even load Ubuntu 5.10 live. But I want to run
Dapper Drake Kubuntu 6.06.1 LTS. Whenever I try, I get as far as the
first splash screen and it hangs at "Mounting root file system".

As a result, I can't even do a disc check or load a live version.

Yeah, known good CD. It's what loaded my other systems. Something screwy
about the hardware is my guess. This same hardware decided to stop
recognizing all network interfaces under Windoze, which is why the lack
of interest in a dual boot.

* AMD64 3200+
* 2G RAM
* Onboard Gigabyte NIC
* Old CD drive/burner IDE
* hda & hdb are 60M Maxtors at the end of their warranty running IDE
master/slave. No change when one is disconnected.
* hdc & hdd are new 320G WD SATA configured in RAID1 using onboard logic.
* nVidia graphics PCIe, onboard sound, floppies, 400W P/S
More specs on request. Once upon a time, all worked nicely together
under Windoze.

Answers would be nice, but I'll happily settle for new places to look.
Otherwise, I'm dead in the water until the next Installfest.

(Yes John, it *was* running when you left, thanks much. It's gone screwy
since.)

TIA
Bruce
