I'm not familiar with i484 at all. I've used amd64 and left it for i386
(which will most likely appear as i686 when it determines your processor).

lsmod will show the modules loaded - find the sound modules and compare
them between knoppix (while it's running) and what's available on the
debian installation drive. If that doesn't give any differences, boot
the debian drive and see if it's loading different drivers altogether.
If that's the case, somebody with a better memory than mine should be
able to direct you toward changing the modules that get loaded (Mark
helped me with one of those a few years ago, so I know it can be done -
just don't remember how).
If you're lucky, they will both use the same module names, but knoppix
will be a different size (showing it was modified), and you can try
copying the knoppix drivers over the debian drivers (obviously save
copies of the debian drivers). This may give you working sound under
debian when you restart.
