i suppose i should make this note:

the kernel is the same 2.6.18-3 for both the amd64 and i484, the only
difference it the archtype.  sound worked great under amd64, does not
work under i486.

as for using knoppix i can do that, but were do i look, what am i
looking for etc... to find the sound drivers in order to make this thing
work under the above kernel.
