Ray:  Please provide make up of the computer you are having problems
with.  Also where exactly are you in the Debian installation, etc.

You mention 9 months attempting to install. My children took about that
long and I don't think Linux is that complicated :-P   .
Have you tried other flavors, Ubuntu being one of several hundred?
