Ray --

Get the latest Knoppix CD, boot it on that computer, and see if it runs sound. 
It probably will. Then, exploit the differences -- see what's different on 
your setup than the Knoppix setup.

If Knoppix doesn't run sound on your computer, that may (or may not) indicate 
that the sound system's vendor chose not to support Linux, and you need to 
download very specific Linux drivers, if they exist.
