No guarantees, but this might be worth a try...
I've had the best luck using a knoppix live cd when detecting hardware.
(Patrick and others are also very savvy on which live cd's are good
for detection, so chime in if you have a favorite)
If you can get a knoppix live cd to run smoothly with whatever is giving
you fits through straight Debian, you might be able to copy the specific
knoppix drivers that work, to your debian installation.
In fact, if a knoppix (or similar live cd) will run, try an
installation. It might be easier to extract knoppix from the debian
base, than to get the debian base to run with other drivers.
