what the chipset is of my new vid cards from windows?
I picked up a pair of MSI NX7600GS 256M pci-e cards and am currently
running them in SLI under winXP.
This is the system a few months ago we could not get linux running as
even the CLI would lock up and crash under the following distros:
Debian testing 64bit
FC5 32 and 64bit
SuSe 10.1 64 and 32 bit
failed gentoo install due to my complete lack of understanding on how to
get it to install
Live CDs only semi worked Ubuntu, Knoppix, and SuSe 9.x, but none of
them would allow for any real testing of the nvidia drivers for the cards.
SuSe 10.1 64bit semi worked, but as i just don't get yast and the HOWTOs
were not accurate (telling me to do one thing, but that one thing was
NOT THERE TO BE FOUND were the HOWTO stated it would be found, etc...) i
was never able to do much with it and the performance was greatly lacking.
the following is the rest of the system specs:
Asus A8N-SLI Premium MB
AMD 64 +3800 (i think this is the X2, but not 100%)
2G pc3200 ram
DVD burner/combo drive
600W PSU Antec true power 2 (brand new just replaced the other one that
died, was an Antect 550W true power)
sATA 300G drive
floppy
don't know what else you need to help, but IIRC Bryan Smith pointed out
that my last set of vid cards was not a very good chip and would most
likely never work under linux, thus the replacement of them. Part of my
Christmas gift to my self.
I have been waiting for Debian 4.0 to be released, but as that project
is delayed for one reason or an other, please do not bother going into
that, I am looking to install FC6 or OpenSuSe, yeah yeah yeah i hear ya
about the MS contract, but if it works, it bloody works. I would prefer
Debian, but do not want to mess with changing the repositories again and
again over the next few months while waiting for 4.0 to be released.
I have a new drive on the way that i will be installing into the system
that i plan on putting linux on. so this project will start soon. So
if any of you have experience with either 64 or 32bit distro with full
GUI and SLI support with Nvidia i would love some feedback. i am
wanting to move my gaming back to Linux and get rid of Windows again.
Spoiled i am with Linux as my desktop and it irks be a tad to be FORCED
to run winXP due to hardware restraints of Linux.
