 From what I understand of this case, Fraunhoffer DOES own the rights, 
but Altec-Lucent now owns them as well as Bell, the 2 founders/creators 
of the MP3 format.

What it looks like to me is Altec-Lucent is losing money fast and they 
see this as a way to inject cash fast (er) then they can earn it.  I do 
not know if MS stopped paying for the license or if there is more to it, 
but this bothers me deeply.

I know MS is known for NOT paying for technologies and for stealing them 
on more then one occasion, but if MS really has paid for the "rights" to 
use the MP3 codec, then that should be the end of it, unless as i 
stated, MS has failed to continue to pay per some agreement with 
Fraunhoffer and thus they do owe said amount.
