I was successful at eliminating that screeching sound once, with 90 feet of 40
strand ribbon cable. - remove the drive from it's cage, swap the 90 foot
cable for the existing cable, being very careful when replacing the end
connectors. Then I buried the drive in the back yard, 4 feet deep (but above
the water table - make proper adjustments for your own yard). I haven't
heard a peep out of the drive since ;-)
More seriously, get it backed up as SOON as possible. Today is not too soon
if the data is important or not already backed up. Once it decides to give
out, you may not get a second chance.
