I'll also put in a vote for python, and for an additional reason.  There are a 
LOT of free tutorials on line, and an incredible wealth of sample code to see 
how things work.  I'm also fond of wxPython as a gui development tool.  All 
of the wxPython tools can be examined in one large demo program that gets 
installed with the software (and wxPython has a no-nonsense mailing list 
dedicated to how to do things with the software.  If you like to learn by 
example, python is an excellent candidate.

Of course this doesn't make python better or worse than ruby, but it is a very 
accessible language.
