I added all of the Ubuntu sponsored repositories at http://packages.ubuntu.com/. The everything under edgy and edgy-backports was added. I also installed Automatix2 and ran it so it would add its repositories. I did not let Automatix install anything other than that. This way after the install they can be added easily by the end-user. I installed all of the Ham Radio section as shown here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/hamradio/

I think all of the packages in the Ham Radio section have a PowerPC port available. I've never had to build from a source package, but I believe the knowledge you seek is here: http://pwet.fr/man/linux/commandes/p/apt_src
