howdy-

i have an almost-new Brother MFC-420CN all-in-one unit that i don't
need (i've upgraded to a slightly larger unit.) i've had it since
august, it's still in excellent shape, just a few minor scratches on
one edge. i've only printed MAYBE 100 pages with it- i bought it
because i needed a scanner.

details...

- colour inkjet printer, up to 1200 dpi resolution, with separate ink
tubs for each primary colour (all four tubs are the originals which
came with the unit, all four are about 80% full, all four work as of
earlier today.)

- scanner WITH AUTOMATIC DOCUMENT FEEDER, up to 600x2400 dpi optical
resolution.

- fax (up to 33.6Kbps, will do colour if the other end supports it.)

- copier, colour or black and white, can reduce or enlarge from 25%
to 400%.

- connects via USB or ethernet.

- if connected via ethernet, it supports "scan to computer x" from
the machine's front panel (so if you have three machines connected
with their windoze or osx drivers, you can walk up to the unit and
scan a document, and the unit will send it directly to whichever
computer you tell it to send the output to.

- if connected via ethernet, it supports "pc fax" where the computer
can send a print job to the unit and tell the unit to send the output
as a fax rather than printing it to paper.

- memory card slots for SD/MMC, SM, xD, and CF type 1 or 2. it can
print pictures directly from a memory card (i.e. if you pull the card
out of a camera you can print pictures without using a computer at
all) and it can also scan and save the images to the memory card.

here's the nice part- brother has linux drivers for it available for
download on their site, WITH SOURCE CODE. not only do they provide
"print" drivers, but they also provide a "pc fax" driver (where you
can send a job to the unit and the unit sends the output as a fax
instead of printing it on paper.) i haven't used their specific
drivers, but i have sent it a few text-only print jobs from a linux
server and it worked pretty well.

i still have the original box, packing materials, and manuals- the CD-
ROM with the drivers was destroyed by accident (dog's wagging tail
knocked the CD off of my desk, i didn't see it, and i rolled over it
with my chair and snapped it in half.) their drivers are all
available from their web site, so it's not the end of the world.

i'll have it with me at the installfest tomorrow, we can hook it up
to the network and try it. i paid $120 for it, the first person to
hand me $50 takes it (and if nobody does, i'll probably take the next
best offer at the end of the installfest.)
