[Leaplist] recent request for LAN name resolution help

thanks for great responses recently from many re: name resolution on LAN. I
have decided that there's still too wide of a gap between my knowledge base
and that which can be known about linux to ask broad questions like "duh,
how does Name resolution work?". The harder I tried to understand the
responses the more questions I have and the more mired I become in my own
ignorance.
All responses were helpful and each led to discovery but my core question
still remains.
(the disguised core question was really "why does it work differently on
ubuntu than fedora" but I didn't want to state it that way). However, I've
decided that I'm not yet ready to know the answer, I'll be content that it
just works.
But as example that I'm really _trying_ to learn something, fuzzy's response
that included the following;
>>> Getting only the IP address from nmblookup output:
>>> fuzzy at laptop ~]$ nmblookup machine_name |grep 00 |cut -d " " -f 1
>>>192.168.1.101 <http://192.168.1.101/>
got me to learn 'cut' which solved a truncation problem I had somewhere else
that I'd given up finding
an answer through google. (I did not know of 'cut') and also led to some
understanding of nmblookup which was also new to me.
