[Leaplist] green machine (XO) and LAN name resolution

couple of things...

I've got one of those curious little green computers called the XO from O)ne
L)aptop P)er C)hild G1G1 program (Give 1 Get 1).  I'll bring it to the
meeting on Thursday if anyone wants to check it out. Fat fingers need not
apply.. keyboard reminds me of the 'orginal' TI-99/4 but shrunken. Initial
impressions;
-i like some of the new UI things they've done (for the target users).. I
think they call it 'sugar'
-WIFI seems really sensitive, MANY of my neighbors are seeing blinking
lights on their WAPs now.
-Not too hard to get to SSH (i was afraid it was gonna be)
-I think Professor Negroponte has done something really good here.

2nd thing;
I don't understand name resolution on my home/lab LAN. I've got a mishmash
of Fedora 7 boxes,
old and new ubuntu, win98, XP, ancient RH9. Most of the linux boxen are
plain installs with little tweaking. I use mixture of samba and nfs to get
things connected. I've got everything with static IPs (it's easier on my
simple mind). My problem is that I have to resort to using the static IP in
the mount call to mount a CIFS store to my new fedora boxen. On the
ubuntu's, the mount seemed to work fine by using the host name. Since the
propagation of samba(CIFS) host names is a total mystery to me I have no
clue as to where to start to look. This is not a request to solve a
problem, I've got (almost) everything working that I need to. But, If
anyone remembers a link that lead to an "AH HA" moment re name resolution
(smbfs/CIFS/nfs) please pass it on. (ps, don't worry.. the win98 boxes
never see the internet in fact, the entire LAN doesn't)
