There are different theories on how advertisements affect the psyche.
Some believe that all advertising is taken in the same way, while more
recent theories suggest (and I agree) that your subconscious starts to
tune them out. For example, look at any web page today, how many of the
advertisements do you *really* notice when you're reading the core
content?

Amusingly, because I don't know/care much about cars the way most
Americans seem to, I never noticed that, they were just shiny vehicles
to me.

Another possibility would be that they would reduce the costs of
creating the content, but that's increasingly unlikely - with movies
costing hundreds of millions of dollars to make, music CDs that take
ages to produce then have multi-million dollar videos to go with the
lead tracks, nevermind all the merchandising and publicity - it's a
wonder that so many companies still think this is the best way of doing
business.

I'm still waiting for the first ad-sponsored Linux distro, I'm surprised
it hasn't happened yet (or has it?).
